Looking Cute with Hand Me Downs

Looking Cute with Hand Me Downs

I grew up always wearing hand me downs. It was great to have an older sister (who was therefore deemed wise and stylish) who could give me clothes that were super cute, much like this metallic purse and flowy blue dress.

During our elementary and teen years especially, I’d get a huge heap of clothes from her every summer with items that didn’t fit her right anymore. I never looked at these clothing items as lesser than the clothes I picked up brand-new at a store. In fact, I actually liked the secondhand clothing more. They had a stamp of approval from an older sibling. If these clothes were declared cool and worthy from my rad big sis then I knew I was in the clear!

Distinctly I can recall an olive jean jacket my sister handed down to me. My sister had cut off the collar, rolled up the sleeves, and wore it in high school. Although it was a little big on me as a 13-year-old, I walked around in it confidently because it felt so good to wear something that someone I loved and admired once owned! When sharing clothing with people you love, you can attain this type of feel-good feel where clothes becomes especially treasured and valuable to you.

This dress I’m wearing is also from my sister. It’s a flowy piece with long, ¾-length sleeves, perfect for fall. I paired the dress with this crazy metallic silver purse that I picked up at a thrift store in the LA Valley for $2.50! It has an inside zipper and looks really cute worn cross-body.

This day I met up with a longtime friend at the Los Angeles Arboretum in Arcadia, California. It was wicked walking around these crazy looking desert plants. There were different spaces of the park in relation to biospheres around the world. There’s even a garden that has herbs; a fun stop to sniff the air. If you’ve never been, I’d definitely recommend that you check it out! Plants, greenery, and being outside in general makes me so happy. I’m a nature lover so an afternoon of roaming through exotic plants and soaking in sunshine was my kind of Saturday!

    1. Thanks so much Mirjana! I’m lucky that she has good taste! It’s so fun to swap with siblings and friends. Sometimes it allows you to experiment with clothing that you wouldn’t have to guts to buy at a department store.

        1. Totally agree. Plus, usually people just get tired of their clothes when they donate, so they’re still in good quality. What’s old to me might make a friend super excited to wear. 🙂
