Mindful Purchasing and Custom Ordering with eShakti

For this week’s post I wanted to talk about something different―mindful purchasing. A big problem in a resource limitedSustainable Daisy: thrift shopping upcycling sustainable fashion recycled clothes ecofashion picture image world is balancing what the environment can provide with the consumeristic demands of fast-fashion. In today’s world it is considered common and actually quite normal to make impulsive, blind purchases.

Instead of walking into a shopping mall and impulsively buying items that catch our eye, what ever happened to stopping and thinking? Hmm… Will I still be wearing this a year from now? Three years from now? Do I even really LIKE this?

Prepping for the new season tends to involve a person buying a heap of clothes that are kind of what we were looking for, in a color that sort of matches our skin tone, in a cut that’ll hopefully look nice on our body type. I mean, we can try things on, but that can take a lot of time and sometimes we leave the shop empty handed. Or, we buy clothes that are just good enough. Sound familiar?  Not sure about you, but for me, a lot of trial and error goes into this process. I feel like it shouldn’t be that hard to find the perfect outfit.

I want to start a new conversation. What if we could find the perfect outfit? But first, let’s think about what we want, how we want it, and how we’d tailor it. This is where eShakti comes in.

Sustainable Daisy: thrift shopping upcycling sustainable fashion recycled clothes ecofashion picture imageeShakti approached me and asked if I would like to try their services and write about my experience, so I decided to give it a whirl. I try to focus my wardrobe on second-hand materials but on occasion I have the need to purchase something I can not thrift. When I do, I like to think… What can I buy that will last, will be used, and will look great?

eShakti allows its customers to customize the exact size and style of the dress. You can measure your bust and waist for example, and custom a garment perfectly tailored to your body type. Not only is this convenient in terms of making you look fabulous, it’s a great alternative way of shopping with the environment in mind. eShakti does not have pre made clothes in their warehouse. Instead, they design outfits based off each custom order. That way, each item made is an item that will be used with no excess inventory… In other words, there are no wasted materials.

What I enjoyed from my experience was how my dress fit so nicely on my body and how well made the material was.  I custom ordered my dress to have a V-neckline and shortened the hem a bit to accentuate certain parts of my body. Since this dress is designed exactly to my liking in a classic fit, I can see myself wearing this ten years from now. Talk about a great investment!

If you’re interested in customizing something for yourself, you can enter the promo code “sustainabledaisy” anytime between now and March 26 to receive 10% off your order.

You can also check eShakti out on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

Hope you all had a great week!

  3. I love what you have to say about being mindful of what you’re purchasing, and I love the dress you chose! I (evidently living under a rock) didn’t know about eshakti before now and am completely intrigued by the idea of customizing clothing to my measurements. *crossing fingers that my first order is as beautiful as yours*

    1. That’s awesome! I’ve been so much more mindful towards buying clothes, and customizing is a great way to get exactly what you need. It’s a new concept to me too, this was the first time I ordered a customized piece and I had a lot of fun with it :). Enjoy your order!

  5. The dress is very beautiful indeed, Karen! It has lovely embroidery.

I think the question you rise here is very important. And every one of us as a fashion purchaser has to realize how big is our impact on Earth’s resources!

By buying the “new trend” fast fashion piece we waste valuable (and limited!) resources, but also in a while – we throw away that purchase and add more the already overflowing landfills…
Fashion is style, timeless design and unique choice to express ourselves… not mass-produced.

    Great work for eShakti.

Thank you for opening that discussion, Karen!

    Cheers,
    Mariana

    1. Thank you so much Mariana! You have great points. It’s important to give thought to your purchases because it does exhaust a lot of resources (including water, energy) to produce everything you see in stores. Finding a timeless dress is a great way to buy something that you know that you’ll be loving for years!
