DIY: Tassel Shorts

Sustainable Daisy: thrift shopping upcycling sustainable fashion recycled clothes ecofashionI found this pair of thrift shop BeBe shorts at the Goodwill for $3. I found a similar pair online marked at $88! They are high-waisted and roomy with deep side pockets. I’ve been looking for a pair of shorts that have a grown up look and fit and this pair is exactly what I’ve been needing. I thought how much stinkin’ cuter these would get with a tasseled trim (again inspired from Mary Elizabeth’s DIY pom pom hat tutorial). I’ve been finding that hats, shorts, shirts, and pretty much anything made from fabric is darling with just the smallest line of detail.

The tassels I added to the bottom hem move along as I walk in a playful, yet subtle way. I got a couple glances from a waitress today at a coffee shop while wearing these. I tend to be lost in thought when I see a fashion item that’s really stylish or unusual and I could tell similar thoughts were turning in her head. If only she knew I paid $3 and had a really fun time making them! Gives the story of my clothing some depth, don’t it? Fashion has become a huge creative outlet in my life and the transformation of secondhand clothing to truly unique, personalized pieces is a treat for my imagination to play with.

In fact, I think anyone can make beautiful outfits out of any budget, with or without artistic ability. All you need are a few items and a moment to craft. If you want to know how I pieced these shorts together, take a look below for a quick 3-step DIY!

3-Step DIY Tassel Shorts:

Step 1: Turn shorts inside out. Line up a trim to the inside of the bottom hem. This way only the tassels will show below the hem and we’ll hide any possible gluing goof-ups. Seal the trim to the hem with fabric glue or a quick stitch.

Step 2: Work slowly and hold the glue as needed. Fabric glue doesn’t seal immediately like a hot glue gun, to make sure the trim is pressed along the hem. Work on small sections at a time to gradually allow the glue to dry.

Step 3: If you’re a bit impatient like me, use clips to hold one side in place while you continue to glue on the other. Let the trim sit clamped to the shorts for a few hours. When the glue has dried turn the shorts inside out. Enjoy!

  2. Not just a really cool idea (thrifty, DIY is always a really cool idea) that turned out, you seem to be able to carry the look quite well – the shorts suit you, just as you suit them 🙂

  3. I make a good portion of my clothes, but there’s just something about a really good thrift buy that just makes you feel like you’ve won a prize! I love that feeling. These shorts are super cute!
