I’m happy to say that I’ve tried my first bamboo toothbrush! I received a toothbrush from Gaia Guy and I’m excited to share a review on how these are biodegradable and made from renewable bamboo. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world, and with over 1,000 strains, some bamboo species can grow up to 35 inches a day. That being said, not only is bamboo a highly renewable resource, it’s sustainable due to its ability to quickly grow and naturally replenish itself.

The toothbrushes are made with a 100% natural bamboo handle and bamboo charcoal bristles that act as an antimicrobial agent. The brushes are also BPA-free, lead-free, phthalates-free, and guilt free! The packaging is eco-friendly too; made from recycled cardboard with no glue.

Ian of Gaia Guy makes a great point on how strange it is that we surround ourselves with so much plastic, let alone put plastic in our mouths every day. Toothbrushes get thrown out every few months, so the average person uses about 300 toothbrushes in their lifetime… yikes! That’s a lot of plastic going into the landfill. Luckily, Gaia Guy brushes are a much more eco-friendly option that you can toss into your compost bin. Gaia Guy took inspiration of creating biodegradable products by mimicking nature to achieve a sustainable, ethical grave for brushes that were made from the earth, and then for mother earth.

The brushes last as long as conventional toothbrushes and are a daily reminder that you made a choice to be eco-friendly. Isn’t that a nice way to start your day?

Along with my nifty new bamboo toothbrush I decided to try a zero-waste toothpaste recipe, and you guys, my teeth feel so clean. I used this recipe from Lauren Singer’s blog Trash is for Tossers. It’s super simple! All you need is:

  • Coconut Oil
  • Baking Soda
  • Peppermint essential oil (optional)

Use one part baking soda to two parts coconut oil, and add drops of essential oil for a minty kick. I mixed my paste in a reusable air tight tin, but a small mason jar would work well too.

Using this toothpaste with the bamboo toothbrush felt amazing on my teeth. My mouth felt fresh, sanitized, and not irritated at all. I’d definitely recommend this combo, and I’m happy that I will no longer have to buy toothpaste! This do-it-yourself toothpaste is a confident reminder that I can control what I put in my body, what I spend my money on, and I can make my own decisions on how I take care of myself. I am all about that!
