Dimmblá, Icelandic for “deep blue,” is a sustainable fashion brand created by Heiðrún–a passionate woman with a desire to wear clothing that aligned with her values. Heiðrún strived to wear clothing that was made in respect and love of people and the environment. Some of which are these beautiful glacial scarves made from banana silk! I’m so excited about these scarves because they’re so beautiful, well-made, and have an awesome story.

It started in 2013 when Heiðrún was shocked to learn about the devastating side of the fast fashion industry. Not only do many fast fashion retailers hire underpaid garment workers in dangerous work environments, fast fashion can be incredibly wasteful. Heiðrún explains that the clothing industry is the second largest polluter in the world. It also takes 2,700 liters of water to produce a cotton t-shirt and up to 11,000 liters to make a pair of jeans. It makes me wonder: why all the waste?

Banana Silk + Sustainable Practices

Dimmblá uses sustainable methods to make their clothes to omit industrial fertilizers and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Dimmblá uses banana silk which comes from the banana stem and processed into a fiber. It blows my mind how innovative sustainable fashion manufacturers are at using natural, kind textiles to make their clothing.

Another thing I love about these scarves is that they come with a small carrying case made from the same banana silk! This is great because it helps preserve the fabric so you can be mindful to take care of the product. Since I wore these to the beach, I wrapped them up afterwards and placed them into their carrying cases to protect them when I wasn’t wearing them.

And let’s circle back for a moment… How many of y’all have clothing made of banana silk?! Not only that, it’s such a beautiful, well-made piece! You can tell the quality of the piece immediately. It has a special feel to it where it just feels luxurious and special at first sight, without effort in styling it.

Versatility is Beautiful

What’s beautiful about these banana silk scarves is that they are classic pieces that can be worn several ways. The versatility of one piece makes clothing really special to me because they can be utilized over and over again. I had fun wearing the scarves as a headband, a skirt, a bikini cover-up, and tied at the waist for some visual interest to my outfit. I also love these banana silk scarves because they are ageless, seasonless, and timeless.

I really liked the scarves for the beach because they offer extra sun protection. Not only that, it’s nice to use them as a coverup at the bust or waist. I think they look a little magical and bohemian. I felt like a hippie princess wearing these around Malibu. It was such a calm, beautiful day and I felt beautifully styled. (:

Fighting Climate Change

Dimmblá partners with a couple Icelandic environmental groups including Landvernd and Oceana.

Oceana focuses on protecting the world’s oceans! The two scarves I’m wearing are called the Kafald Scarf and the Hret Glacial Scarf. Both of these scarves are apart of The Glacial Collection which is a reflection on the current effects of climate change. In particular, this collection highlights the threat global warming has on glaciers. The images on the scarves were taken by well-known Icelandic photographer, Ragnar Axelsson. With the purchase of either scarf, a donate is made to Oceana to help heal our oceans.

I love wearing clothing that has aspects of nature woven within the fabric. Nature is a divine beauty, and there’s no pattern that is really more beautiful than the leaves of a tree, grooves within a moutainside, or ridges of a glacier.

In a day to day sense, these scares hold such a beautiful story, made with so much love and good intention. I’m so pleased to implement these into my wardrobe because I will be able to tell my friends and family more about climate change, the beauty of the natural world, and eco-friendly fibers like banana silk!
